Understanding Benedict's Law
Benedict’s Law was introduced following the tragic death of five-year-old Benedict Blythe, who died from anaphylaxis at school in 2021. The legislation places clear responsibilities on schools to improve allergy safety and emergency preparedness.
Schools are required to:
- Have an allergy safety policy
- Publish the policy
- Keep the policy under regular review
The accompanying statutory guidance also expects schools to:
- Appoint a named senior leader for allergy safety
- Keep spare adrenaline devices available
- Deliver annual allergy training for all staff
- Review allergy procedures annually and after serious incidents or near misses
